Joel Silver of ISF on Signal Quality & HDMI Rankings

Joel Silver, Founder & President of the Imaging Science Foundation, Inc. (ISF) has dedicated his professional life to improving video quality and has consulted with us here at Monster Cable. ISF’s mission is to improve the quality of electronic imaging. Toward that end, Silver and ISF travel the globe, consulting manufacturers; certifying and training video engineers and installers in calibration, digital imaging and display standards; working with the media to test equipment and licensing display products that contribute to systems with “High Fidelity Video.”

After the Daniweb.com “Round-up of 50-Foot HDMI Cables in Home Theater Environment” gave Monster HDMI cables a perfect “10”, we tracked Joel down at a seminar in Boston and asked for his overall take on the review. Joel was particularly struck by the part where the reviewer noted visible flaws in the picture quality when another cable was tested, yet still awarded that cable a ‘9’.

It took awhile, but we managed to edit Joel’s very entertaining and informative 30-minute rant into a concise paragraph that sums up the thoughts of a man who lives for perfect video signal integrity:

“Interesting article — but to give a “9” to a cable with motion artifacts and color saturation loss that is severe enough to be visible on a movie is just wrong - those losses are catastrophic! If you see degradation in motion (smear), if you see visual color breakdown, it is a catastrophic breakdown. Visual distortion is not acceptable. Cameron gave us a half billion dollar movie with color saturation to die for. It’s criminal to smear the detail of Avatar. If you see a flaw, it’s a failure. In our world, there is no mediocre grade — it’s Pass/Fail. We have had trouble with ALL non-Monster 50’ cables – this is the reason we travel the globe and train with Monster gear - we have no time to deal with errors on cables.”
